Why we run slow

If you take one thing from this whole site, take this: the pace that builds a runner is slower than the pace that feels like training.

The conversational test

You should be able to speak a full sentence without gasping. If you cannot, you are running your easy days at a moderate effort, which is the most common way to stay exactly as fit as you were last year while getting more tired.

Slowing down feels like a demotion for about three weeks. Then the long runs stop hurting, the week after a hard session stops being a write-off, and the whole thing becomes something you can repeat.

What steady does over months

Easy running builds the unglamorous parts — capillaries, mitochondria, tendons that tolerate load. None of it shows up in a single session, which is exactly why it gets skipped. It shows up in month five, as a pace that arrives without effort.

Where the name came from

Kikobana is built on two ideas borrowed from somewhere else: keep it and keep on, and move forward without losing balance. We learned both from young mothers in Uganda who were rebuilding a life in small, consistent steps, long before we applied it to a training plan.

If you are training for your first 10k, this is the entire method. Run most of it slowly. Do it again next week. That is the sport.
